Currie Community Council

October 1998 Meeting

The New Council

The newly elected office bearers are listed below. Full of enthusiasm as they all are, now is the time to raise with any one of them any issue with which the council can deal. More importantly, perhaps, you can also offer to help - especially with our valued flower tubs.

Chair: Graham Dane (449-2771);
Secretary: Freda Morrison (449-2675);
Treasurer: Gordon Browne (538-6394);
Education: Arthur Hilton (449-3029);
Environment: Brenda McGovern (449-3292);
Planning: Derek Henderson (449-2262);
Flower tubs: David Bertram (449-2483);
Transport: Jim McCraith (449-5754);
Health: Charles Urquhart (449-2155).

As in previous years, two senior Currie High School pupils were co-opted to represent the views of young people: Mark Paxton and Scott McDonald. For his expertise and good advice, their Head Teacher Eric Melvin was also co-opted again. Co-option to fill the remaining three vacancies for voting members was postponed until a later meeting.

Millennium

All good ideas are welcome for any scheme which would bring some of our lottery money back to Currie. Projects to do with the arts, young people or any other aspect of community life can be considered. This will be on the agenda for November.

Riding and Fair

This is advance notice that the Riding of the March is planned for Saturday 1 May 1999 and the Fair for a week later - Saturday 8 May. These were highly successful last year - so mark it on the calendar now.

Police

There were several cars broken into recently. The pattern of incidents indicates that only one or two criminals were involved, so if they can be caught the problem would be solved. To do this, all suspicious movements should be reported to the police at once, in particular any prowlers in the middle of the night. Currie is still a peaceful and safe place to live. Our vigilance can help to keep it that way.

Environment

Free "Poop Scoops" are available from Balerno Library

George V Park

Restoration of the park following the visit of the fairground shows will cost about 5000 pounds, which will be reclaimed from the organisers.
