Currie Community Council
September 2000 Meeting
Kenny MacAskill MSP
Kenny MacAskill, Lothian MSP and shadow
minister of transport, gave a stimulating address to the council in
September. He ranged over local and wider issues, from City of
Edinburgh Rapid Transit (CERT) proposals, which he is against, to
integration of rail transport with Edinburgh Airport, which he
supported.
Health
Disabled access to the Health Centre from the
Pentland View car park is being pursued. A hand rail will be
installed very soon as an interim measure.
Planning
Planning convener Archie Clark is playing a very
active role in the on-off public enquiry, where he and other local
representatives face full time professional representatives of
well-resourced developers.
George V Park
The council agreed that a metal sculpture to be
made as a training project, could be sited in the park. It will
obviously have to be robust and suitable in other ways, but the park
is becoming more of an attraction all the time. The pupils of
Curriehill Primary School braved the rain to plant wild flowers which
they had grown from seed, and the meadow is full of colour as a
result. Well done to them, and to the teachers who have guided the
project - and also got wet.
Surplus Buildings Seek New Uses (continued)
The Council
offices on Lanark Road West are probably going to be sold and the
property converted back into a house. As always, views are invited on
this suggestion.
AGM
The October meeting will be the AGM of the Community
Council, to which everyone is invited, and also the general meeting of
Currie residents called to elect the committee of the Currie Fair and
Common Good Fund: this is the committee which organises the Fair and
the Common Riding. Volunteers are always welcome for either of these
committees, so anyone who wants to make a mark should turn up at 7.30
pm on 9 October in the Gibson-Craig Hall. Heriot-Watt University has
agreed to supply a member for each body, so there will be a wide base
of support.
