Report August 2002
Planning
The CALA Currievale public enquiry will be held in the Scout Hut on Lanark Road West from 18 September to 18 October. It is open to the public to observe proceedings and it would give a good impression if local people dropped in from time to time. There is more detailed coverage of this issue elsewhere in this C&B News. Currie Community Council’s submission is scheduled for 14 October, although this may change. Phone Archie Clark on 449-4703 for details if you wish – or just walk in.
Transport
Councillor Andrew Burns, City of Edinburgh Council Executive Member for Transportation, will be speaking at a public meeting in Nether Currie Primary School at 7.30 pm on Monday 23 September.
Extensive work will take place in Juniper Green to replace ageing water mains, starting at the end of September. This can be expected to have a major impact on traffic flows.
Police
In Currie in July there were: two housebreakings, one involving theft; three other thefts; one unsuccessful and two successful attempts to break into cars; two living room windows broken; three cars vandalised. On the positive side, three boys were charged with smashing windows at Riccarton and Curriehill Primary Schools. As always, the police will act when they are promptly informed and have good information from the public. Let us help them to help us.
Flood Prevention
You have until Friday 6 September to comment on the proposal to build high flood walls down the Water of Leith. Currie Community Council support the more ecological version of flood prevention, with tree planting (tree replacement!) in the Pentland Hills, contour ploughing and use of the reservoirs to control flood waters. Feedback forms are available from Balerno Library (why not Currie?).
Environment
The Grand Plan of a path from the water of Leith Walkway to the canal is progressing slowly. A pilot study on a bridge over the river is being prepared, and a grant application is being made to upgrade the beach near the bowling club.
Just a reminder that Bat Boxes are available for a nominal £3 charge from the Parks Department.
It has been suggested that the old salt store enclosure next to the Youth Club be rearranged to make a recreational area – opening the wall on the park side and using the stone to fill up the road side gateway.
Thanks to Brenda McGovern for driving these improvements forward.
