Currie Community Council August 2010 report
Speed Limit on Lanark Road West
Two letters have been received supporting our campaign to enforce the existing 30 mph limit on Lanark Road West. Only if broad support is shown will we be able to convince the City Council that extra measures are needed. Please let your views be heard either to us or to one of your Councillors.
Twinning
Heriot-Watt University have given strong backing to the German twinning proposal, and others have shown support. What do you think? Would you like to take part in an exchange with a town in Bavaria? Would you put up a visitor in your home and then visit them in theirs? Would you come to a party to welcome a delegation from overseas? Would you welcome visitors to your place of work, your church or your pub? Send us an email.
Currie Market
Currie Community Council agreed in principle with plans to start a farmers'/ producers' market in Currie. When the Juniper Green one starts on 25th September, that will make a chain of monthly markets along the valley, on different weekends. The preferred site would be at Pentland View Court, although no decision has yet been taken. Experience in Balerno and elsewhere shows that the shops on that site can look forward to increased trade on market days. Those with long memories will member that Currie Community Council acquired the right originally given by an Act of 1705 to keep a weekly mercat for all kinds of merchandice. Who says the wheels of government move slowly?
Pedestrian Crossing
Following the presentation by Nether Currie Primary School, the Environment and Transport Group of Pentland Neighbourhood Partnership have backed the proposal to have a pedestrian crossing near the Co-op Garage. Don't get too excited — lack of money means nothing is likely to happen this year at least. It is another small step along the way, though.
Bus lanes enforced by camera
The City of Edinburgh is proposing a Traffic Regulation Order to allow drivers to be fined for using bus lanes if they are photographed by a traffic camera. New government regulations will allow Edinburgh, and some other places, to enforce bus lanes in the same way as parking restrictions, without needing police involvement.
