A memorial stone commemorates the achievements of this international climber.
Dougal Haston, born in Currie, was one of the greatest mountaineers that Scotland
ever produced, the first to climb the most dangerous 'direct route' up the north
face of the Eiger as well as the first to climb the South Face of Annapurna, he
created new routes up Everest with those other great mountaineers Chris Bonnington
and Doug Scott. His life was brought to a sudden end while skiing alone in the
Swiss Alps when an avalanche killed him. He was only 37 years of age.
Anyone

"Breathtaking adventures by Dougal Haston from childhood to later life; a very interesting
account of some major climbs by one of the great climbers of his day. The writing
is very straightforward, and shows what climbing meant to the author."
