MUSIC ACTIVITIES AT HERIOT-WATT

CHORALE EXCELSIOR

is the choir of Heriot-Watt University. Chorale Excelsior gives concerts on and off campus throughout the year. The choir joins up with the orchestra for two of the concerts. For a third concert the choir performs on its own off campus, normally in St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh. Singers from the campus and the Edinburgh community are welcome to become members of the choir. Rehearsals start on the first Tuesday of each semester.

SINFONIA EXCELSIOR

is the orchestra of Heriot-Watt University. The Orchestra gives regular concerts on and off campus and plays for the annual Carol Service. Membership is automatic for music scholars and previous members, and by audition for new members during 'fresher's week'. Auditionees please contact Steve King to arrange an audition during fresher's week. We welcome members from the Edinburgh community and further afield. Rehearsals start on the first Monday of each semester.

EXCELSIOR PER CANTUM

The scholars vocal group meet every Monday lunchtime in the Gibson Craig Seminar room. The repertoire explores Renaissance Scotland as well as other music from this period and beyond. EPC features in the University' carol service in December and the University anniversary service in February, as well as the choirs in St.Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh.

VOCAL CHAMBER MUSIC

Singers are encouraged to become involved in a variety of musical activities. The Heriot-Watt Upper Voices Choir produced a very successful CD a few years ago.

INSTRUMENTAL CHAMBER MUSIC

Coaching is available and help is given to form groups. Excelsior String Quartet and Excelsior Wind Quintet are University-based chamber music groups and are available for concerts, functions and weddings.

hWU-TRASH-CLANG

Junk Music! We make musical instruments from trash and then practice set-pieces and create new music too! Meets every Wednesday evening in Lecture Theatre 4.

JAZZ SOCIETY

The Jazz Society meets on a regular basis in the Chaplaincy. Please e-mail Steve King.

HERIOT-WATT PIPE BAND

The Heriot-Watt University Pipe Band has been in existence for over 13 years and was founded primarily for HWU students and staff; however, everyone is welcome to join. The band meets once a week in the Terrapin Building, from 7-9pm.
Contact:Jürgen Munz.

Some of the pipers led members of Currie Community Council in their Kirking ceremony.

INCHCOLM NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE

INME exists to support the very best in Scotland's composing talent. Tours and recordings are set up to encourage involvement. This group is seen as the flagship of music making at Heriot-Watt, reflecting the cutting edge of science and technology for which Heriot-Watt is celebrated. The Inchcolm New Music Ensemble is the music group for COMA Scotland [contemporary music for amateurs]. COMA is the UK network for all activities dealing with new music for amateur musicians. The group toured the Orkney Islands in September 2000, played various music clubs and festivals in 2001, and in June 2002 and June 2003 participated in a one week course at Inverie in Knoydart [west coast of Scotland] culminating in concerts in St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh. These summer courses are now a regular feature of the groups’ activities. November 2002 saw the group do a short tour of the Isle of Skye. INME was resident at the 2004 St. Magnus Festival in the Orkney Islands and made a return visit to Inverie in 2005. 2006 and 2007 saw the group take up a new residence at Ardtornish on the west coast of Scotland, giving concerts at Iona Abbey off the west coast of Mull, Dunkeld Cathedral, Ardtornish House and St. Giles Cathedral. The INME toured the Czech Republic in June 2008. In 2009 the group returned to Ardtornish, giving concerts at Ardtornish House and St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. The INME has premiered over 50 new works during the last ten years.

SCOTTISH YOUNG COMPOSERS COMPETITION

Heriot-Watt holds an annual competition each year for young Scottish composers. The winners receive a prize and their piece becomes part of the Inchcolm New Music Ensemble repertoire.
